Alphabet recently announced in its latest quarterly earnings report that YouTube reached more than $6 billion in advertising revenue during the first quarter of this year, up 50% year-over-year.
The MLC also launched a new, five-part webinar series about their Data Quality Initiative (DQI) starting on April 27th. Head of Third-Party Partnerships, Dae Bogan, will host each of the five sessions with one of The MLC’s DQI partners - Vistex, Blokur, Exactuals, Music Data Services, and TuneRegistry - presenting their version of the DQI to showcase opportunities to check musical works data in bulk.
Apple’s services business hit more than 660 million paid subscriptions and topped $16.9 billion in revenue during Q1 2021, up from $13.3 billion a year ago. Services encompasses a wide range of Apple's businesses, including Apple TV+, Apple Music, the App Store, iCloud and other software sales.

The MLC announced its first-ever monthly mechanical royalty distribution this week, coming from the use of musical works by US digital service providers during January 2021. Total royalties amounted to more than $53 million for all usage data when calculated at the applicable statutory rates. The MLC was then able to match approximately 80% of the royalties reported to musical works registered in its public database.
Apple is planning to roll out a podcast subscription service in May, allowing creators to set prices and offer perks to subscribers like ad-free episodes, early sneak peeks, and additional or exclusive content.
The Canadian government announced this week that its latest budget allocates $70 million (~USD $56 million) for the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Music Fund to inject emergency funding into the country’s depleted music economy. Around $50 million (~USD $40 million) will go to the live music sector, which has lost 92% of its revenues during the pandemic, according to the Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA).

Reservoir Holdings, which owns Reservoir Media, has gone public on the Nasdaq stock exchange via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) with a $788 million enterprise value, marking the first standalone publishing company to go public on a U.S. stock market. Golnar Khosrowshahi, founder & CEO of Reservoir, will lead the company alongside her current executive leadership team.
The Songwriter Fund offers emergency grants to songwriters in the form of pandemic relief. Directed by songwriters Autumn Rowe and Michelle Featherstone with management by Sarah Robertson, and backed by Songwriters of North America (SONA), the fund has distributed over $400,000 in grants to songwriters who have been hardest hit by COVID-19 - and is accepting donations for another round of relief funding, with applications opening on April 28.
Spotify recently launched its new music listening hardware and smart device for the car called the Car Thing. The new gadget’s anticipated retail price is $79.99, but is available for free for a limited time for select users, with Spotify only charging $6.99 postage.

Indian major label T-Series and Indian copyright collection organization, IPRS, has inked a deal to work together, marking a “watershed moment in the Indian music industry.” T-Series is the largest music label in India and the biggest YouTube channel in the world, boasting a catalog of over 200,000 titles and 178 million subscribers. IPRS says the addition will enhance music publishing operations as well as make doing business easier for numerous music licensees.
The RIAA announced in a newly released 2020 report that Latin music’s total US revenues rose 19%, more than double the 9.2% registered for the overall music industry. This drives Latin music’s total percentage of the market up from 5% in 2019 to 5.4% in 2020. The growth was largely driven by streaming revenues, rising by 20% and now making up 96% of total Latin music revenues.
The MLC recently posted a press release seeking suggestions for a music publisher representative to fill an open seat on its Operations Advisory Committee. According to the Music Modernization Act (MMA), the Operations Advisory Committee “makes recommendations to the Board concerning the operations of the Collective, including the efficient investment in and deployment of information technology and data resources.” Suggestions should be made no later than May 8, 2021.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) has added on three new leadership hires with Kristen Johns (Chief Legal Officer), Nathan Osher (Assistant General Counsel – Publisher Relations) and Andrew Mitchell (Head of Analytics and Automation) earlier this month. With all three based in Nashville, they will be responsible for various tasks, such as leading the organization’s strategic legal affairs, managing and overseeing the resolution of claims and litigation-related matters, and leading The MLC’s analytics and automation activities.
Audio streaming service Spotify has recently announced its acquisition of Betty Labs, the creators of live talk app Locker Room. According to the company, the buyout “builds on its work to create the ‘future formats of audio’ and will accelerate Spotify’s entry into the live audio space”.
UK collecting society PPL stated that its Q1 2021 distributions to artists and recorded music rightsholders were down 30% from the Q1 2020 amount due to the impact of COVID-19 on performance rights collections. PPL’s distributions from international collections held up fairly well, down 9.9%.

YouTube has released a new short-form video experience called Shorts, now available to all US users. The company initially beta-launched the feature in India in September. And since then, it has passed 6.5 billion daily views globally. YouTube has added a new homepage section to highlight the short form videos.
Yesterday, Spotify unveiled a demystifying guide explaining the process of streaming royalty payouts with “Loud and Clear”. There are no artist names on the site, but the company says it “aims to increase transparency by sharing new data on the global streaming economy and breaking down the royalty system, the players, and the process.” One statistic states that as of 2020, Spotify has paid over $23 billion in royalties to rights holders - including over $5 billion in 2020 alone, up from $3.3 billion in 2017.
YouTube is allowing video uploaders more control over whether their content falls into Content ID by launching a new copyright-checking tool called “Checks”. In a span of around three minutes, Checks will take a look at a video during the YouTube upload process for potential copyright claims. After that, it will take two more minutes to check for ad suitability restrictions.

ASCAP’s new annual report showed that yearly revenue collections grew by $53 million in 2020, up on the $47 million growth in collections the organization saw in 2019. Domestic US revenue was also up by 2.5%, partly driven by gains of 28% in audio streaming revenue and 8% in audio/visual revenue.
The Copyright Office has issued an interim rule, pursuant to the Music Modernization Act (MMA), regarding notices of license, data collection efforts, reports of usage and payment by digital music provider blanket licensees, notices of nonblanket activity and reports of usage by significant nonblanket licensees, and data collection efforts by musical work copyright owners. It became effective October 19, 2020.
YouTube reported that in December of 2020, more than 120 million Americans streamed YouTube and YouTube TV on their TVs, further stating that about one-fourth of this group watched content almost exclusively (more than 90% of their total viewing) on TV screens.

SoundCloud announced a new “fan-powered” model of distributing royalties this week. Each listener’s subscription or advertising revenue would be distributed among the artists that they listen to, rather than their plays being piled into a collective pool. The service is expected to benefit its artists based on this new model beginning on April 1 2021.
Jack Dorsey’s mobile payments firm Square has recently acquired a majority stake in Jay-Z’s music streaming service Tidal for $297 million, according to an announcement made on March 4. Tidal currently holds approximately 70 million songs and 25,000 videos to listeners in 56 countries. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021.
US music industry revenue increased 9.2% to $12.15 billion in 2020 from the prior year’s $11.13 billion total, based on figures released in the RIAA’s year-end revenue report on February 26. Streaming particularly increased by 13.4% from 2019, accounting for 82.9% of total US revenue. This marks the fifth consecutive year of growth for the music industry.

Spotify recently announced this week that it will be expanding its service to 80 new markets around the world, including countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nigeria. The international expansion is expected to make Spotify available to more than 1 billion people globally who didn’t have access to the service before.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has launched SoundSys, a performance rights revenue distribution system, in partnership with music tech firm Bmat and four collecting societies in Asia. The company also launched the repertoire data exchange service RDx last year.
After a detailed discussion between representatives at Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music in UK’s streaming economics inquiry, the parliamentary committee holding the event published written comments by the three major labels, specifically on the topic of user-centric payouts and equitable remuneration (ER). These measures are being highlighted favorably to propose potential changes to the streaming ecosystem.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) recently stated that this week, it received an estimated $424 million in accrued historical unmatched royalties from a total of 20 digital service providers (DSPs) along with corresponding data reports that identify the usage related to these royalties. The delivery contained more than 1,800 data files in excess of 1.3 terabytes and nine billion lines of data.
Next month in March, YouTube is bringing its short-form video format, YouTube Shorts, to the US for the official launch. The company has been testing the format in India since September and reports that it has been watched more than 3.5 billion times a day in the country.
iHeartMedia is set to acquire Triton Digital for $230 million in a recently signed agreement with The E.W. Scripps Company. The acquired company is an Advertising Technology SaaS platform for audio streaming, podcasting, and metrics that enables publishers to monetize their audiences, focusing on advertising infrastructure and measurement.
